In 2013, Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) issued 1 coin on each of the 25 districts of Sri Lanka spanning across its 9 provinces. The coin shown here is on district Hambantota under the southern province. Its an 11-lobed, 8.35 gm circulation grade, plain-edged, 10 rupees, SS coin with a diamter of 26.4 mm and thickness of 2.3 mm, featuring MM Rajapaksa Port and Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, minted by Mincovna Kremenica of Slovak Republic. The series is an attempt to identify the economic actvities of each district and publicize them through circulated and uncirculated coins and setting a road map for financial consolidation of CBSL. Wish India could also do some such exercise by releasing coins on all states and UTs. I anticipate at least a series on the forthcoming smart cities or on DFCCI (dedicated freight corridor corporation of India).
